Taking your wheels in to be professionally trued only makes sense if you have a really nice bike that you want to keep in race-ready condition where everything runs like a swiss clock.
On anything else, truing your own wheels is easy as hell to do with your bike upside down and one of these multi-spoke wrenches. Nothing else is required, just good eye-balling skills.
It's not about saving a few bucks, it's about having the basic skills to fix any problems you have yourself. Which is arguably one of the pillars of commuting by bicycle/enjoying bikes.
