>>1818111>>1818126Jobst is correct. The Sheldon 'a bit too loose' advice is backwards, especially with low quality (to his mind, non-Campagnolo) parts. A better idea is to set the adjustable cup slightly too tight, so that the balls burnish the races.
I would guess most people don't realize how little is needed, it is a delicate adjustment. For new parts, the difference between "good enough" and "burnish it" is something like a 1/32 turn. An experienced person can do this by hand and eye, but the only visualization aid I've seen are those old Barnett stickers with 1/8th inch marks. For parts that are already broken in/new parts with no binding the preload adjustment is truly a slight movement.
There's more to it, hinted at by that first Jobst line you quoted. But I don't think you would understand further explanation. Probably best for you to just use cartridge bearings.
