Australia's "The Ghan" during its final years of operation at its transfer station in Alice Springs in February 1977. Running on 3 ft 6 in track, it was one of the longest narrow gauge railways ever built at 2,979 km or 1,851 miles. The last service ran on November 26, 1980 and the railroad was closed. It was revived a few months later using standard gauge and a slightly modified route to avoid the floodplains that plagued the original train's existence and has been running ever since.
