It's all about early adoption and being a part of some "clique". It exists in every hobby, every hobby has some "hipster pied piper" who leads a swarm of gullible fuckwits towards spending a shitload of money on something that is objectively nowhere near it's real value.
In some ways I'm very impressed with these pied pipers, they create an artificial desire for some shite, and then capitalise on it hard. The only catch is that they have to sell their soul.
Personally speaking, I'm too old for this, I've been caught out before (vinyl, fixies, vintage cameras), and I just don't give enough of a shit. I'm not impressing anyone.
