I'm fond of triples, and dt shifters. You'll get used to it. Remember to trim the fd and you'll get more useable range at either end.
For road cycling tight gaps are very important and the gearing almost everyone rode before triples was fucking retardedly high, to get those tight gaps. Triples where a blessing. Remember also that compact cranks didn't used to exist.
