The problem is we build for cars and only for cars. We don't build infrastructure for bikes, transit or even people. Nothing about building for other modes of transport means everyone will be forced to live in studio apartments, many streetcar suburbs are very walkable and yet they have a nice mix of SFH, townhomes, duplexes and apartments. The "everyone will live in the projects" is an incredibly lazy and stupid straw man.

I don't think suburbs are a problem inherently, I think it's a problem that in America we have few alternatives.

Lots of people would like other kinds of housing and other kinds of neighborhoods but it's a tiny % of the housing stock because it's not permitted in most residential areas, which is retarded.
