It's about time for me to get my license and try to move up to mate (tugs). Have any of you foregone the sea school and just studied on your own & tested directly w/ the Coast Guard? Guy on my last hitch was encouraging that route but I'm afraid I won't learn everything I need. But I also really don't feel like spending all my time off and $3k+ for school/lodging.
