Plus, as far as commuting goes, we all saw how NYC fared when the suburbanites quit coming into the city, and the rich fled for the outlying areas (Hamptons).
The "car-free" numbers in New York are decreasing, and only Manhattan, Bronx, and Brooklyn are majority car-free, and the overall numbers of the city are just about 4.0% away from 50.1% of New Yorkers having a car, so by your own logic, New York is dangerously close to flipping to having pro-driving politicians that ARE "aligned with the inner city".
