I typed up all this shit to get a "thread does not exist" so I'm posting a new one. North of Powderhorn and east of Hennepin it's fine by USA standards, by which I mean if you enjoy performative use of public transit you might also be able to do 1 other thing that day that doesn't involve transit, as long as you start early.
Hellishly flat for cycling but if you're into granny bikes and being slow, it's alright. Very unracer-ish bike scene. There's a lot of bike shops, which sort of makes up for the unracer culture. Like you will sometimes see an actual nice bike in the sea of crust+chris king+giles berthoud "I enjoy setting my money on fire for no reason" builds.
Car-free living is fringe, there will probably be a few others in Hennepin County but most of the people living car free are just too poor or have too many DUIs (which doesn't stop most minnesotans from driving anyway).
