there's also a historical reason, atleast in america, where boomers grew up with bike boom 'road bikes' in the 70s as the common casual rides, those bikes were really everywhere and really really terrible and so when mountainbikes appeared in the 80s/90s it was like not only a catagorically different thing but they were just in general better quality, like the brakes worked for example, and so boomers associated 'road bikes' with heavy non-functional 'old' garbage and thought mtbs where just better in every regard.
The inverse of this trend has happened now, with millenials growing up with all cheap garbage being mtb-esque and so many millenials often have an adversion to mtbs.
