Go for steel, preferably tange or prestige
Go for rigid, forget suspension, even the good ones are likely to be fucked by now, and even if they are perfect order they'll weigh a lot and just make normal road riding feel shit.
LX, DX and XT components are all great from that era.
Light rust is fine and pretty much to be expected, but be sure to check for any serious dinks, dents or cracks in the frame, these can all be potentially catastrophic to the bikes structure
If it,s clean and working well, if the decals are in fairly good shape, if the saddle is original and not torn or battered then you may have found a well loved and well looked after example, google the name of the bike and do a little research yourself before you even bid on a bike. It's amazing how much you will learn by reading old forum posts and threads.
If you find a nice mid to top range bike in your size and in great condition within your price limit then go for it, $300 is not a lot of money for a bike that will give you thousands of miles of service, they are fun biks to ride, the geometry makes them very comfy too, they really are peak bike when it comes to being good for almost any role except professional road racing.
