I pepper sprayed a puppy who wanted to play.
I was on tour in some unknown village when a dog started chasing me. He was older and bigger than this, on the ground he would probably reach halfway up my thigh, but you could tell he's still young from the thick paws and the general body shape. He would just crouch on his front paws and spring towards me in what I'm 90% sure (but not positive) was a playful manner. But the more I tried to shoo him away, the more he kept coming at me, and his teeth were getting uncomfortably close to my calf. I couldn't take the risk of being wrong so I gave him a quick squirt right in the middle of his stupid, smiling face. That smile followed by a second or two of confusion before the pain registers and he drops off to roll around in the grass will haunt me forever.
I have betrayed his trust in humans, something for which I cannot apologize or atone. Because of me, the next cyclist he chases might actually get bitten. I have made the world just a bit more evil place and there is nothing I can do to fix it.
Of course I could have been reading his body language entirely wrong and he was about to bite me, but replaying it in my head I really don't think so. I just wish I could have sprayed the owner instead of him.
