Riding a single speed up steep hills (up to 13% for some short segments) is totally different. It is a full body workout just to keep moving. Then the other side of the hill is more reasonable, a steady 9% so you're just standing up using your quads for five straight miles--a big workout just to complete the ride, whereas if I pedaled in my climbing gears on my 22speed it would just be an easy spin.
