I think the best way to explain LA's layout is that it's like a spider web, only with a few mountain ranges that extend radially from the city center and break the web up into "slices." Here's a fantasy metro system map that somebody did, I think it's a pretty good take on what we'd need to have a metro system that would actually make sense.
