I was the opposite, I bought a road bike and am surrounded by gravel trails. I got some slick gravelkings 32mm, hope the fucking fit lol. A pair of 35mm knobbies juuuust barely rubs the chainstay, so I should be ok.
Personally, I see no reason why the majority of road bikes don’t just come with clearance for bigger tires. What would the draw backs be for normal riders? It’s not like you need a 1x drivetrain, steel frame, etc... just to hit some gravel. Tires are enough unless you’re on a pure road/aero bike.
