There's really only 3 reasons to go merchie: the time off where you're free to do anything you want, to see cool shit (be it places/other ships/cargo), and getting paid a shitload more money than someone of equivalent experience/skill would make shoreside. There's a lot more devils in the details, but ultimately those are the big advantages of the merchant marine and why everyone puts up with the bullshit.
