it's called suburban sprawl for a reason OP
It's low density and unfriendly to pedestrians. Winding roads and weird road layouts, deadends and developments that wind into the woods increase distance, so that a 1 mile commute becomes a 2 mile commute and so on. Often times more hills too. Low density means that the only stuff you get to go to is a shitty strip mall and a burger king, maybe a pizza hut and a subways. Once you get past that, its 10-20 miles of 4 lane highway to get to any jobs.
I grew up in NH. If you didn't have a car, you didn't have a job. Going anywhere on a bike was a legit 3 hour ride and was more of an ordeal and was only recreational. I fucking hated biking as a result.
Also, the city is a nice place for a bike ride. Pictured is Allston in greater boston right outside my house. It's fucking beautiful and all that bullshit about the country being so nice is meh.
And if I really want suburbia, I can just bike 15 minutes to get to suburbia in nearby watertown. Cities end abruptly.
