>>1737444Sand. If you feel wishy washy or sketchy at any time then you'll appreciate wider tires. Here's a pic from taking a fixie on a dirt road. The green is dry hard packed dirt. No problem at all with the little 25mm tires. The yellow is shallow sand, not a problem for any experienced rider. Bad news for noobs. When that sand got deep, it's pretty sketch. Red is just off road off trail loose dirt and rocks.
When you have 2"+ tires you can mob over all of that at any speed and not even look at the ground and have confidence going faster and carving corners. This was my first time on dirt with 25mm tires and felt pretty fun, but it's a lot more dangerous than my 29er which Is just bomb through effortlessly. If you find yourself picking lines and dodging anything on the ground, you could use wider tires.
