Otherwise bikes have to pretend to be cars and disrupt traffic. Imagine if you have to make a left turn. You're on the right shoulder, but now you have to shift lanes at least twice through high speed traffic to reach the turn lane. Assuming you're still alive you now have to hope that the traffic light can even tell that you exist.
Or bikes have to pretend to be pedestrians and ride on a skinny poorly maintained sidewalk. God forbid you run into another cyclist going the other way or one of you is gonna have to swerve into the fucking grass.
