I definitely think that they were a near miss in both forms. Improvements to the draughting would increase fuel efficiency and altering the cylinders to have a longer stroke (28" instead of 24") would reduce their reputation for being slippery.
I think the main issue was not building or converting them to have Caprotti valve gear instead of the chain drive valve gear.
