This thing (pic related) has a cheap coil, 100mm, front and back and I got steep and droppy black lines on it sometimes. It survives. It's fun because it's not enough bike for it.
A bit more travel doesn't change what you can ride--just how you ride it. Suspension is *mostly* there for grip.
That extra 20mm/20% of travel definitely helps with bottoming out and and grip, but it isn't going to be the difference in you making it down the trail. That's up to your comfort and ability.
