They're not exactly like US desktop setups though, you get brakes on the left and throttle+reverser on the right, swinging horizontally instead of vertically like the new US ones, and they're generally continuous instead of notched. (Though UK DMUs/EMUs and some locos have notches.) I also find the brakes a lot more straightforward than the manual bail ones a lot of US locos have, if you want 20% brake you just put the lever at 20% and the system does the rest automatically.
Class 66 and 70 locos, being designed and built in North America by EMD and GE respectively, are exceptions though. The 70 has a pretty typical modern GE desktop setup and the 66 is a weird hybrid, throttle and reverser are similar to US side stands but on the right, while the brakes are on a weird springy joystick thing on the left that works sort of like manual brakes but you push it one way to add more brake, pull it the other way to release, and just let go when you've got the right amount. (Also I might be wrong about which direction is which, been a while since I've "driven" one.)
