like shoes, they can be supportive and comfortable and expensive but if they're the wrong size, they'll still hurt your feet.
infuriatingly, unlike shoes, saddles usually only come in one width . you can't say "I'll take a Selle Royal in 150mm, please." you have to figure out your sit bones width, roughly figure out how they're going to engage the saddle on the bike due to either how upright or aero you're usually going to ride, add mm appropriate to that engagement, then search saddles and go down the specs to find the width listing, and hope the overall build and whatever else is going to suit you. so trial and error should be expected; but also, well made saddles can be forgiving and especially if you're built like the average cycle hobbyist the odds are in your favor
