aside from the obvious of telling Carl Icahn to fuck right off, they were fucked over by keeping their older planes in service for way longer than they should have.
replace the L-1011s with A-330s and 767s as quickly as possible like they wanted too in the 80s. replace the 727s with 757s in the 80s instead of the 90s. replace the 747-100s with 747-400s as soon as they can in '86, possibly even becoming a launch customer. those -100s really outstayed their welcome, and the 747 was still a backbone of their fleet until they were forced to take them out of operation after TWA 800. if they got the -400 they likely wouldnt have gone anywhere for a long time. their service was pretty good even to the end, so thats not that much of an issue but still worth noting.
