Sometimes I watch old videos, when I can't sleep.
For a long time, it was Bundesarchiv videos showing traditional work/traditional crafts, but recently I've found two good sources for vintage road races (one is a stack of VHS tapes lol). Most of it is just race coverage, with the odd documentary. I tuned out from pro cycling in the mid 90s, but this old stuff still has the magic.
My friend with the tapes knows I like Sean Yates, so he pointed those out. One I hadn't seen was "The High Life" (same team, same time), which is Robert Millar in 1985, a lot of it during TDF. It's not half bad; softspoken Scot, right at the peak of his ability, stuck in a foreign country, under huge pressure. Good interviews with Allan Peiper, too.
I didn't know anything about his recent history, but my first impression is that it's not the usual tranny pariah behavior. This person didn't demand anything, but suffered in obscurity for 20+ years. Somehow that's more palatable?
I watched that Sigma Sports interview, with Matt Stephens, and it's obvious that this person is doubly frail, long-tortured. Like a dog that always flinches. I don't know what to think about it.
(I always liked Fignon too. Pre-ponytail, it's uncanny how much he looked like my father.)
>>1773024A mediocre joke, but a truly rotten idea. Some things are carefully worded, eg "Philippa York (competing as Robert Millar)", but others rewrite/omit any mention of the former name.
