It is kind of ironic that around half of the 209 Series EMU cars are still in service after 20+ years according to Rail Lab (516 out of 1030) despite they were built with that philosophy in mind, although that means their replacement will come soon enough.

What about the Osaka Loop Line where the newest 323 Series EMU running alongside with the JNR Era 201 Series EMU (and 103 Series before they got phased out)? Mind you the 201 Series is being gradually replaced by the new 323 Series as more are being built and put into service.

I'm not sure if you considered the train services in the Hiroshima area as "mid/long distance", but that region also has the 227 Series EMU running along with JNR Era 113/115 Series EMU as well
