To expand on the theory a little, multicolor frames make this tricky, but most bikes have identifiable primary, secondary, and accent colors. The primary color is the main color on the frame, secondary is the color of the frame decals (and this is usually what you match your saddle and tape to). Accent color is what's on your seatpost, stem, drivetrain components, rims, and tires, and potentially on the frame decals - in this case you're usually limited to silver/grey/black (and black/tan for tires) and these should be more or less consistent across the bike or a 50/50 mix - typically you want these to contrast with the frame for a modern/racy bike, or to be complimentary for a vintage/classic bike.
