Unless you fly racing gliders, you're never operating in a flight regime where you would give a shit about low-energy flight. The airlines' solution is to avoid low airspeed, which is a stopgap until automation handles all the low-level stuff.
You all are just the intermediaries between the passengers and the airline company, you have to manage risks and make decisions based on changing circumstances. You don't need to be able to control the airplane, and requiring those skills is just a holdover from the past.
