The expensive ones have lighter, better aluminium frames, with carbon forks, and a snappy racey feel which is not the ride quality a comfy utility bike should have, and if you enjoy it, you'd enjoy a proper road bike.
If you've ever ridden a quality chromoly frame, you would never want to go back to above for casual riding.
This is what a hybrid should be. Full chromo frame & fork. Comfy ride. Reasonable build quality. Shock horror, it's based off a classic rigid 90s mtb.
For many people, they can buy a high quality chromo bike inexpensively used.
