What the fuck do NIMBYs have in their heads?
I came to this thread to let out some steam, because I can't fucking take this.
So, there's this place in the outskirts of Madrid called Villaverde. It used to have a shitload of industries back in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Then, as globalization started taking place, industries were taken somewhere else. The neighborhood turned into quite literally "Spain's Detroit", as it has been described by many newspapers. It's always the same story.
So it turns out the local NIMBYs have been complaining about all the crime, and all the hobos in the streets, and they blame it on unemployment. Well, not that long ago it was announced that a logistics center in Villaverde was going to be built, and around 2000 jobs were going to be created. What are the NIMBYs doing? Complaining, of course! They're now saying that this logistics center will cause too much noise, and pollution, and it's literally Hitler!

Well, there's a small branch line that diverts into the industrial part of the town, and currently serves a car factory and some small railroad industries, mostly to do with train inspection and maintenance.
Back then, the mainline also ran along the surface, but it was buried in the 80s.
The NIMBYs think TO THIS DAY that it was because they pushed for such a thing, when the reality is that it was buried because it was a single non-electrified track at the time, and it was way cheaper to simply upgrade the line entirely and bury it, since it had lots of bridges before. And of course there was a lot of profit made from selling all the land that was on top of this newly buried line. Because of this, they think they have the power to bury this small branch line, which, due to technical reasons, can't be buried.
Pic is the branch line in the 70s. cont.
