The UK have uniquely tall maximum vehicle height laws compared to western Europe, and our infrastructure like bridge clearances have been built around that height forever. The rest of us lack about half a meter, which is definitely noticable for interior ceiling heights in double deckers. You can make four meters exterior height work for coaches where people sit most of the time, but not for line buses where people constantly get on and off and may travel standing, plus some bridges may be even lower than that. We usually just opt for articulated buses instead, with steerable axles they have more or less the same turning capabilities as rigid units.
