>>1877344I dunno about other options, but if youre used to rim brakes like vbrakes or cantis, you'll be fine mechanical disk. They kind stink a little bit more than rim options (imo), are harder to set up just right, but they do stop and come with all the other disc brake advantages (which are major bonuses for commuter bikes). No new tools required.
If anything, cheap shimano hydraulic levers and calipers are like $50-75 bucks to replace and are definitely superior to vbrake or canti. And last a long time. You also got cable actuated hydraulic calipers off of aliexpress which apparently are very good and even cheaper, go check out TraceVelo on yt he digs deep.
