>>16046261x has some problems
as
>>1604629 indicates even with an 11 tooth sprocket at the back a farely large chain ring is needed for the highest gears
consequently a larger rear sprocket is needed to achieve a reduction ratio for the lowest gear
old mtb could have 24 or 28 teeth chain rings up front for the low gear
and 36 to 38 teeth middle chain rings for medium range / flat ground
along with 46 to 48 teeth for higher gears within the limits provided by 14 tooth sprockets or the latter 13 and 12 tooth sprockets
the triple has a given amount of redundant ratios eg most 21 speed bikes only had 14 discrete ratios (1x14 soon lmao)
however each one of those near duplicate ratios can be found on straighter chain lines than a 1x
and with older 7 and 8 speed cassettes the chain thickness for MTB remained the same as the old six speed chains
9 and 10 speed mtb along with special narrow road bike chains really fugged the goose
they wear out quickly and being so narrow can with greater ease fall off and jam between confinements around the rotating parts of the drive line
