Meanwhile, on the other side of the city, plans are being made for an extension of the existing line 4 (the university line). The 1.3 km of new track shall connect to the newish University of Applied Sciences (FH), as well as to a number of future science, housing and other infrastructure projects.
These plans might also include a cross connection to the current terminus of line 3 in the future.
As you might expect, NIMBYs are protesting these plans as if the tracks should run right through their living rooms. They claim that bus lines 25/26 are enough to serve the area, and that you're still better off cycling from the city center.
This is far from the reality. While I agree that the plans in their current form are stupid as all hell (you'll be faster walking to the FH from "Wellensiek" stop than taking the tram to the future designated station), this is a great opportunity for the city, the universities and their students.
