My county (parish) runs a demand-pull system that only runs 7:30-5:00 on weekdays, with reservations required seven(!) days in advance, and written registration required before that, with a fare of at least $1.50 and no guarantees that you'll be able to actually get to your destination. I've never seen a single transit vehicle and no one I've mentioned this system to here even knows it exists.
As far as I'm aware it's only there to get people who are too old to drive to and from their medical appointments.
I'm considering signing up and using it to get to the local Amtrak station for a day trip down the line and back just to see what's practically reachable in a day without using a car here.
