There are some stops along my route home where the gates are only enforced once a week (with a member of staff present - so I guess it's down to staff shortages) and whenever the gates are not being enforced a lot of people just walk through without using a card/ticket on the reader to indicate their departure.
The thing is that the fare system simply assumes you have boarded the train for the ENTIRE ROUTE which is the maximum fare that gets calculated on your card at the end of a day. So unless they have a season card anyway or are also somehow dodging the reader at the start of their route, they are actually getting charged the maximum fare when many of them think they are successfully cheating the system.
