The Denver and Rio Grande Western is a completely top-tier railroad.
Literally every other railroad:
>Building a railroad directly through the heart of the Rockies?? That sounds scary...D&RGW:
>haha watch thisAlso the fact they went out of their way to have "fast freight" despite their completely nuts area they served. Whenever the grade was even SLIGHTLY straight/flat they'd go and highball it. They stayed independent and financially stable even when other far larger railroads were fuckin' up because they made it quick and easy to ship through the Rockies, instead of wasting time going around them.
Not to mention, they still maintained intercity passenger service later than any other Class I railroad, partially because they were worried Amtrak would slow down their fast freight trains.
Oh and if that wasn't enough? They BOUGHT the Southern Pacific. Y'know the railroad that made the Transcontinental Railroad?? Yeah the D&RGW just flat out bought it. Despite being SIGNIFICANTLY smaller.
Such a shame they only have ONE (1) standard gauge locomotive that made it into preservation... they had Challengers ffs!
Anyways, based railroad, unquestionably the coolest.
