>>1996320>Blackpool's crown-jewel main station was demolished by a greedy, short-sighted local councilThis gets overlooked a lot in the 'reeee Beeching / rationalisation / etc' discourse: BR's closures didn't exist in a vacuum, and if local councils or PTEs were hell-bent on pulling everything down to build ring roads, pedways and concrete bus shelters, making it abundantly clear they're all for building towns and cities centred on cars, then of course BR are going to shrug, say 'well, if you don't need it...', and suddenly Birmingham Snow Hill is now a car park.
