made a thread, deleted it, told to come here. in addition, is there anything that i could miss out on that would be particularly damaging? like is there value in dropping it off at a shop, or if i just watch some youtube videos i should be able to learn it all myself?

so recently my brother gave me a specialized stumpjumper (basically pic related for all i can tell) that he'd not ridden for well over 5 years, and before that he got it off some dude who used to do cross country and had a ton of 90s/2000s cannondales and specialized and stuff.
i don't really know what i need to do make sure everything is "fine" on the bike. i don't really know much about bikes. like today i dropped off a curb and popped the rear tire. took it in to a shop and the guy says the rim tape is fucked. took it off, replaced it, put a new tube in for 20$. then he spins the wheels and goes "both your wheels are out of true" and yeah they both wobble. the chain is kind of rusty and probably needs to be replaced. it's probably a 20 year old bike or so, how would i go about finding out what's good and what needs to be fixed on it?
i could just give it to the bike shop guy and hope he doesn't jerk me around but i'd also like to know myself so i can make sure everything is maintained well.
