calipers and center pull brakes have some good points
but side pull can eat a dick in terms of balancing

a screw driver a 10 mm wrench an 5 mm allen key along with spare pads and straddle wires seems a bit much to carry around
most people just un hook the rim brakes and bike carefully to the nearest source of tools and spares
one of the few upsides to disks is that only the hub is important
the rim can be what ever size width or surface it wants
and when the disk wears out just replace that rather than the entire wheel rim
drum brakes are nice too
just many are too small and do not have the right alloys and ventlation
