One generalization that IS true is that they are all young. The oldest continuous settlements in the US are barely 400 years old and the overwhelming majority of American cities are less than 200 years old.
Consider that the oldest building in Venice is over 800 years old. Given that the region had been settled for hundreds of years before that, this means hundreds of years worth of buildings did not survive.
