The average cyclist probably doesn't understand how their bike works either. Being mechanically ignorant of your transport is perfectly normal and fine. Specialized professionals exist to do the maintenance for you, and in the case of cars, strict regulations and standards, plus regular checks, govern their safety.
There's no reason to be arrogant about it.
I think the tone of your whole post, and of op, is just a little angry and upset. I empathize or agree with a lot of what you both say, but I think your attitude must be hard to live with as a cyclist. Try to be a little more positive man. Cycling is really fun. That's gotta be the subtext of all this discussion.
