For decades, Japanese carriers ran 747s on domestic flights. The last domestic 747 flight in Japan was a Haneda-Naha ANA flight on March 31, 2014 (< context of photo)
Yet, no Japanese carrier has introduced next-generation quadjets for domestic routes, like the 747-8 or the A380-800. ANA is purchasing three A380s-800s with delivery in 2019, but only for the HND/NRT- HNL route to Hawaii. Why is this? What economic factors can explain why JAL, ANA and low-cost carriers in Japan have passed on using 747-8s or A380s for domestic routes?
