What is the public cost of decent public transport in the US?
I realize this is a vague question, but I don't have much concept for what transportation projects cost relative to other government projects. We can talk in orders of magnitude, not exact dollar amounts.
Wondering things like:
>Is the lack of quality public transport a result of lack of public support in ths US (i.e. car culture, nimby's, politicians clueless on challenges of working class) or a result of cost hurdle?
>What is the cost per taxpayer to have a comprehensive and well maintained bus system in a small city? Large city?
>How does the cost of a decent passenger rail system compare to the cost of the interstate? Amtrak is awful in the NW, how much would it cost each taxpayer in OR/WA to run a dedicated rail from portland to vancouver? How does that cost compare to interstate or airport infrastructure?
>What does a practical light rail system cost in a city?
>How do these expenses offer return on investment?
Open to books and websites on the subject. Thanks!
