My dad is 80 years old. He rides a lot, always has. However, doc told him not to overexert himself due to some vascular constriction issues and rather take it a bit slower. While taking it slow is certainly possible on a normal bike with low gearing, it's also way more frustrating to climb every steep hill with snail speed. And since his house is on top of a steep hill, every ride ends with a climb, inevitably.
He only uses the assist (and only in the weakest setting) when he's going uphill for extended periods of time or very steeply. Buying that e-bike was a really good decision for him.
Also, once in a while we can go on a ride toghether and - of course - I take it a bit slower than regularly, but not painfully slow.
So if e-bikes didn't exist, I couldn't ride with my dad and listen to his stories about the old times and how places around my hometown looked like in the 1950s and stuff like that while riding. Also, he always buys after-ride ice cream, which is nice. Sorry for the blogpost.
