He lives in Iowa and they have miles and miles of service roads like pic related and very unsafe road riding with no shoulder + high speed limits + uncaring drivers. So they have a serious motivation to make gravel work. The pictures I'm seeing look like finer gravel and a lot more dirt than your picture
