Question for Ameribros: I want to get a 200 ton mate license. I'm an AB and have the sea time. Is it true that there are two paths to this, that you can either study independently (using Lapware, Captain Joe's, etc.) and then take a CG exam, or that you can take a sea school course and test w/ sea school (in lieu of CG exam)? If so, would you suggest one path over the other?
Also, I've heard several times that Advanced Firefighting and Radar are necessary to get, but I don't see either on the NMC's 200 ton mate checklist. What gives?
