With that out of the way yes you can put a 3x on the front, or you could find a freewheel/cassette with a larger low gear, or do both, but for an older road bike it might not be worth the money. I'd sell the road bike and find a nice old reliable rigid steel frame 80s-90s mtb. Virtually all of them already have 3x front chainrings and a 30 or 32 tooth as the lowest gear on the rear. Their lowest gearing is usually something like 28t in the front and 30-32t on the back, which is overkill unless you are the fattest fuck. 80s-90s mtbs are cheap af and extremely reliable and versatile with much better out of the box climbing ability with their gearing.
