As far as culture is concerned, if you are over the age of 15 and riding a bike in America, you ARE a failure. Bikes are sold in the toy department for fucks sake. (And that says nothing of the street harassment you encounter while riding.)
Same reason why Americans suck at soccer; it's only played by children and is viewed more as an outdoor daycare center/program than it is a valid sport. You're actively discouraged and given no reward for applying yourself there.
