It seems like there's a general agreement that the "first generation" of diesel-electric locomotives consists of the original diesels that replaced steam engines in the 1930s-1950s while the "second generation" consists of the boxy-looking types (pic related is a classic example) that started showing up in the 1960s to replace the first generation.
After that, it starts to get murky.
